Oat Biscuits

An ancient Anglo Saxon recipe

The origins of Anglo-Saxon oat biscuits can be traced back to the medieval period, when oats were commonly grown in Britain. Oats were a staple crop for the Anglo-Saxons due to their hardiness and ability to grow in colder climates.

Oat biscuits were a traditional food in Anglo-Saxon culture, and they were often made for religious festivals, celebrations, and everyday meals. The ingredients for these biscuits were simple: oats, water, and sometimes honey or other sweeteners. The mixture would be shaped into small round disks and baked until crispy.

These biscuits held a significant place in Anglo-Saxon folklore and superstitions. They were believed to have magical properties, particularly in terms of protection and luck. It was believed that eating an oat biscuit before embarking on a journey would ensure a safe and successful trip. Similarly, carrying an oat biscuit in one's pocket was said to bring good fortune.

Oat biscuits were also used in various rituals and customs. For example, they were often given as gifts to newlyweds as a symbol of prosperity and fertility. Biscuits shaped like animals or other symbols were used in rituals related to harvest festivals and other agricultural celebrations.

In Anglo-Saxon folklore, oat biscuits were associated with the supernatural as well. They were believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and were often placed near doorways and windows for protection against malevolent beings. It was also believed that leaving a biscuit as an offering to the household spirits or fairies would ensure their favor and protection.

Over time, this tradition of making and consuming oat biscuits evolved, and today they are still enjoyed as a delicious and nostalgic treat. While the folklore surrounding them may have faded, the tradition of making and sharing Anglo-Saxon oat biscuits continues to connect us to the rich history and culture of the past.
